COLLECTOR’S NOTES: The 163rd Infantry Regiment is no longer active as an infantry unit, but its lineage is carried on by the active 1st Battalion, 163rd Combined Arms Battalion (1-163rd CAB) of the Montana Army National Guard. The battalion is part of the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team. The regiment has gone through several re-designations and reorganizations throughout its history: It was originally organized in the Montana National Guard in the late 1880s. It served as the 163rd Infantry Regiment during both World War I and World War II, attached to the 41st Infantry Division. It was inactivated in Japan in 1945 and later converted and re-designated as the 163rd Armored Cavalry on March 1, 1953. In 1988, it was reorganized as the 163rd Cavalry. Around 2006-2007, it was briefly re-designated as the 1-163rd Infantry Battalion before being re-designated once again as a cavalry unit, the 1st Battalion, 163rd Cavalry Regiment. More recently, it has been referred to as the 1-163rd Combined Arms Battalion, a designation that reflects its modern structure combining mechanized infantry and Abrams tank units.
