The brigade was activated in the late 2000s, after the 1st Armored Division was reorganized into its modular force structure, to serve as a test bed for various elements of the Army's Future Combat Systems program. The 5th Brigade's primary focus was to test advancements for the Army Brigade Combat Team Modernization program.
